AI Policy for authors
The utilization of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies within scientific writing should be
approached with caution. It is important to clarify that this policy pertains solely to the writing
process and does not extend to the use of AI tools for data analysis and deriving insights as part of
the research methodology. When authors incorporate generative AI and AI-assisted tools into their
writing, such technologies are to be used exclusively to enhance readability and linguistic quality.
Such application must be conducted under human supervision and control, with authors diligently
reviewing and editing the output, given that AI may produce authoritative-sounding content that is
nonetheless incorrect, incomplete, or biased. Ultimately, authors bear full responsibility and
accountability for the content of their work.
Additionally, authors are required to disclose the use of AI and AI-assisted technologies within their
manuscripts, and a statement regarding this disclosure will be included in the published work. This
disclosure fosters transparency and trust among authors, readers, reviewers, editors, and
contributors, and promotes compliance with the terms of use of the relevant technological tools. AI
and AI-assisted technologies must not be listed as authors or co-authors, nor should AI be cited as an
author, as authorship entails responsibilities and duties that can only be performed by human
individuals. Each author or co-author is accountable for ensuring that all aspects related to the
accuracy and integrity of the work are properly addressed, and that they have the ability to approve
the final version of the manuscript and consent to its submission.
Moreover, authors bear the responsibility to ensure that their work is original, that they possess the
necessary qualifications for authorship, and that their work does not infringe upon the rights of third
parties. It is also incumbent upon authors to familiarise themselves with the publication ethics applicable to this journal prior to submission.
The utilization of generative AI and AI-assisted tools in figures, images, and artwork
We do not permit the use of Generative AI or AI-assisted tools to create or modify images in
submitted manuscripts. This prohibition includes activities such as enhancing, obscuring, moving,
removing, or introducing specific features within an image or figure. Adjustments to brightness,
contrast, or color balance are permissible provided they do not obscure or eliminate any information
present in the original content. Image forensics tools or specialized software may be employed to
scrutinize submitted manuscripts for potential image irregularities.
The sole exception applies if the employment of AI or AI-assisted tools is integral to the research
design or methodology (for instance, in AI-assisted imaging approaches utilized to generate or
interpret underlying research data, such as in biomedical imaging). In such cases, this usage must be
explicitly described in a reproducible manner within the methods section. This description should
encompass an explanation of how the AI or AI-assisted tools were utilized in the creation or
modification of images, including the name of the model or tool, its version and extension numbers,
and the manufacturer. Authors are advised to comply with the specific usage policies of the AI
software and to ensure proper attribution of content. When relevant, authors may be required to
provide pre-AI-adjusted images and/or raw composite images prior to AI processing for editorial
evaluation.
The employment of generative AI or AI-assisted tools in the creation of artwork, such as graphical
abstracts, is strictly prohibited. However, the use of generative AI in producing cover art may be
permitted in certain circumstances, provided that prior approval is obtained from the journal editor
and publisher, all necessary rights have been secured for the relevant material, and appropriate
content attribution is ensured.
