AI Policy for reviewers

The utilization of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies within the peer review process of academic journals necessitates strict adherence to confidentiality protocols. When a researcher is invited to evaluate another researcher’s manuscript, that document must be regarded as confidential. Reviewers are advised against uploading the manuscript or any portion thereof into a generative AI tool, as such actions may infringe upon the authors’ confidentiality and proprietary rights. Additionally, if the manuscript contains personally identifiable information, this could constitute a breach of data privacy rights.

This obligation of confidentiality extends to the peer review report itself, which may contain sensitive information regarding the manuscript or the authors. Therefore, reviewers should abstain from uploading their peer review reports into AI tools, even for purposes such as enhancing language or readability.

Peer review constitutes a fundamental element of the scientific ecosystem, and SSRG maintains the highest standards of integrity in this process. Conducting a scientific review involves responsibilities that can only be properly executed by human reviewers. The use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies by reviewers to support the review process is not permissible, as the critical thinking and original judgment essential for peer review are beyond the capabilities of such technology. Furthermore, there is a risk that these tools may generate incorrect, incomplete, or biased conclusions regarding the manuscript. The reviewer remains fully responsible and accountable for the content of the review report.

According to SSRG’s AI author policy, authors are permitted to utilize generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing phase prior to submission, solely to enhance language and readability, provided that proper disclosure is made in accordance with the guidelines outlined in SSRG’s Guide for Authors. Such disclosures should be included at the bottom of the manuscript in a separate section preceding the references.

It should be noted that SSRG owns proprietary AI-assisted technologies that comply with the RELX Responsible AI Principles, such as those employed during the screening process to ensure completeness and detect plagiarism, as well as to identify suitable reviewers. These in-house or licensed technologies safeguard author confidentiality and undergo rigorous evaluations to mitigate.
